Icknield Way, the ancient road through Bedfordshire which was the inspiration for "Game of Thrones" Kingsroad is thought to be more than 4,000 years old and passes through Luton, Dunstable and South Bedfordshire. The ancient highway was a key trading route that linked south-west of England and Norfolk.
This prehistoric road passes through Luton and Dunstable according to maps, even though exact route was hard to tell. Its Icknield Way as well which is thought to have inspired George R.R. Martin when he created the Kingsroad in his famous "Game of Thrones".
It was one of four great highways of medieval England, with Ermine Street, Fosse Way and Watling Street being the other ones.
If you travelled on Icknield Way you were under the king's protection and anyone who committed a crime would be tried by the king himself instead of a local court.
In the George R.R. Martin books Icknield Way is the main route through the Seven Kingdoms, extending from King's Landing to the Wall.
Icknield Way in Bedfordshire takes you through Dunstable and Luton, as well as Sharpenhoe Clappers and the Chilterns.
