Milton Keynes zostało wybrane do programu pilotażowego autobusu autonomicznego. Miasto zostało włączone do największego dotychczas programu realizowanego w Europie.

Projekt jest finansowany przez EIT Urban Mobility i prowadzony przez University College London (UCL).

Autonomiczny autobus używa pięciu czujników lidarowych i siedmiu kamer, by mieć możliwość dostępu do idealnego widoku wokół autobusu i nawigacji na drogach publicznych. Operator jest na tym etapie na pokładzie autobusu, gotowy do przejęcia nad nim kontroli w każdym momencie. Testy odbyły się w 2023 roku w Pradze i w Brnie, a także wcześniej, w 2022 roku w Helmond, Hasselt, Kongberg i Riccany. Te w Milton Keynes będą zakrojone na szerszą skalę niż dotychczas.

Autobusy, zarządzane przez technologię z dziedziny transportu Aurrigo, będą mogły zabrać na swój pokład w listopadzie do 15 osób. Będą pokonywać trasę w centrum miasta między Santander UK HQ, centre:mk, Theatre District, a Station Square. Osoby obserwujące i rozwijające projekt z ramienia University College London będą rozmawiać z użytkownikami i mieszkańcami, by móc go udoskonalić.

Milton Keynes jak zawsze jest w czołówce jeśli chodzi o wdrażanie najnowszych technologii, tak jest i w tym przypadku, odnoszącym się do autonomicznego autobusu.

City of Milton Keynes has been selected to trial a new self-driving bus. It's included in a research project, run in Europe, the largest of its kind up to date.

The project is funded by EIT Urban Mobility and led by University College London (UCL). An autonomous bus uses five lidar sensors and seven cameras to create a full 360-degree view around it. It also enables to navigate safely along public roads. At this stage the bus has an operator on board, who can take over control at any time of the journey. The trial was done successfully in Prague and Brno in the Czech Republic in 2023 and in Helmond, Hasselt, Kongberg and Ricany in 2022. Checks in Milton Keynes will be slightly different and the bus will go through multiple stops and carriageways for much longer period than in previously conducted trials.

Operated by transport technology Aurrigo, this electric bus can carry up to 15 passengers by the end of November. It will run in a city centre between Santander’s new UK HQ, centre:mk, the Theatre District and Station Square.

University College London research team will be talking to the bus users to figure out its further development to meet all the expectations.

Milton Keynes is at the forefront of a new, sustainable technology trial. It's important research looking at self-driving vehicles on public roads and investing into our future.
